HONOREE
A graduate of Grant High School and University of Oregon, Renée earned a high school teaching certificate and taught in public schools. She also was head of Congregation Beth Israel’s high school program.
In 1958, Renée helped launch her late husband Irwin’s Reliable Credit Association. Through public relations work and board appointments, she developed a knack for business, writing and reviewing grants and providing publicity. Her many board appointments include Neighborhood House, the Multnomah County Cancer Crusade, Oregon Council for the Humanities, Cedar Sinai Park, Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, Planned Parenthood and the Women’s Association.
The Holzman Foundation was founded in 1989, and Renée has received numerous accolades over the years for her dedication, including the 2007 Rabbi Joshua Stampfer Community Enrichment Award; 1999 American Jewish Committee Maurice D. Sussman Award; the 2005 March of Dimes’ White Rose Honoree; and the Oregon Symphony’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

KEYNOTE
Elizabeth Steiner Hayward is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Family Medicine at OHSU. She has served as the State Senator for Northwest Portland and Beaverton since 2012. She is a Senate Co-Chair of the Full Ways & Means Committee, which oversees Oregon's state budget. She is also a member of the Capital Construction Sub-Committee and the Legislative Audits Committee, both of which address portions of the budget. Senator Steiner Hayward also serves on the leadership team of the Oregon Senate Democrats as Deputy Majority Leader.
In her time in the Oregon Legislature, she has raised the legal age for purchasing tobacco products to 21, increased statewide vaccination rates, passed legislation establishing the nation’s first state-wide universally-offered nurse home visiting program, and addressed the opioid epidemic head-on through behavioral health treatment programs and increasing access to medication-assisted treatment. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, hiking, photography, and cooking.
Elizabeth is a long-time member of Congregation Neveh Shalom and former member of its Board of Directors.

Rabbi Rachel Joseph

Rabbi Rachel Joseph has been with Congregation Beth Israel since 2012. Rachel lived internationally on and off during her childhood while her father, Rabbi Sam Joseph, consulted in progressive Jewish communities from Australia and Brazil to Hong Kong. Rachel is both a Wexner and Tisch Rabbinical Fellow. These are huge honors, given to the best and brightest in the class.

Cantor Eyal Bitton has been at Congregation Neveh Shalom since August 2017 and assumes normal cantorial duties, such as leading services, overseeing the b’nai mitzvah program and taking an active role in pastoral and life cycle matters. He is also a composer, lyricist, and playwright who has penned several musicals and oratorios which have been produced in Canada, the United States, Kenya, and China.
